Betta fish behaviour
Betta Splendens have always been agressive, and it is not a good idea to put 2 males together in the same aquarium. Actually the Betta male can also be agressive with a female if she is not ready to spawn.
When the femelle looks ready and the male has finished a nice full bubble nest, the two can be put together but after they have completed the work, the female should be removed as the male could become agressive again and hurt her.
The male will be very good at taking care of the eggs, repairing any defect in the nest, and putting back any egg falling at the bottom of the tank. But after most of the young Bettas are swimming outside the nest, it is time to take them out of the tank, and relocate them individually in separate small tanks, as the male Betta could just eat them.
Another factor that needs to be addressed from the beginning is the volume of the tank. Don't expect you Betta to live well and be happy in a small zen tank, they need space to move around and the water quality can only be obtained in larger tanks. The minimum is probably around 5 gallons. Many factors will adversly affect your Betta in a very small tank, from poor water conditions to unstable temperature to simple lack of space for your Betta to navigate properly.
